Food Chains & Food Webs

  • Marine ecosystems are broad and complex, with many different organisms occupying different trophic levels and interacting in many different ways. In our Food Chains & Food Webs program, students are introduced the feeding interactions between organisms in a marine environment, identify the difference between a food web and food chain, and discover how trophic cascades can occur both naturally and through human interference.

Students will explore and identify the different trophic levels, correlate marine and terrestrial food webs, explore keystone species, and demonstrate how changes at different trophic levels can impact ecosystem function. Students will also investigate the anthropogenic impacts on food webs. Students will have the opportunity to explore these interactions and apply their knowledge by creating model food webs, and investigate the interactions and cascades of this food web when presented with varying anthropogenic and environmental pressures.

This program provides assessment opportunities for students, with all assessment data provided to teachers upon completion of the practical activity.

*This program is suited for Level 3-4, Level 5-6, Level 7-8, Level 9-10

*This program is suitable for delivery as:

    • Classroom incursion

    • Online webinar

    • Identify, define and characterise food webs and food chains.

    • Develop a strong understanding of different trophic levels.

    • Identify and demonstrate how changes at different trophic levels can impact ecosystem function.

    • Describe the effects of interactions and how these impact food webs

    • Identify the impact of anthropogenic changes on food webs, including overconsumption, environment change, and invasive species.

  • MMF’s Food Webs program is a classroom incursion delivered as an interactive lecture-style presentation with hands-on practical activity. Following an approx. 30-minute introductory presentation, students will be tasked with completing a practical activity where they will create, develop and modify marine food webs. Students will work collaboratively to complete the practical activity, and once completed a closing consolidation will allow students to share findings and demonstrate knowledge.

All incursion materials and resources will be provided by MMF. A practical assessment activity is included in this program.

This incursion can be delivered in a classroom or presentation. MMF requires an interactive SmartBoard or project/screen to deliver this incursion.

MMF can tailor program content to meet your curriculum learning needs, so please speak with an MMF Educator if you require specific content development.
