Conservation

The Marine Mammal Foundation makes science accessible to the broader community and key stakeholders, enabling long-term protection and conservation of marine mammals and their environment.

Connection to the environment, via appreciation of our amazing marine mammals, creates concern, concern creates care, and care creates change!

Our applied research can inform government, stakeholders and the community to create a balanced and transparent conservation effort.

Raising awareness of marine conservation issues and empowering change via communication and positive action opportunities.

We align with other research, community and conservation organisations to collaborate and stand together as a united voice on key environmental and sustainability issues.

Our Conservation Efforts

  • Legal protection for the Burrunan

In 2012, Dr Kate submitted a nomination for the Burrunan dolphin to be listed under Victoria’s Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988, and the species was listed as ‘Endangered’ in 2013, and ‘Critically Endangered’ in 2021. Ever since, Dr Kate and the MMF team have been involved with recommendations and research.

  • Marine Litter Project

Our Marine Litter Project (Bin Not Bay, Litter Free Lakes, Bin Not Beach) empowers action through innovative education designed to inspire appreciation, highlight our amazing marine biodiversity, the impact of our litter, and encourage better consumer choice, creating long-lasting change in behaviour.

  • Informing vessel Approach Regulations

To raise community and stakeholder knowledge of marine conservation issues and empower change through greater awareness and action opportunities.

  • Project Burrunan

MMF’s Project Burrunan is the only research program of its kind in Victoria. With a special focus on the newly described dolphin species, this research aims to better understand and conserve this charismatic and endemic dolphin for future generations to enjoy.

  • Sustainable steps guide

The Sustainable Steps Guide is a resource created by the Marine Mammal Foundation’s Marine Champions, demonstrating how to make a difference in your community. This guide has been designed to provide you with campaigns, ideas, and handy hints for you to improve sustainability or further conservation action within your school or local area.

  • Assessing the Values of Victoria’s Marine Environment

In 2019, MMF was approached to give our research input into the VEAC Assessment of the Values of Victoria’s Marine Environment to help highlight the importance of understanding and protecting our Victorian coastal values, now and into the future.
